Mid/Side vs phase repair
M/S encoding is a great width tool — and the wrong first move when left and right are cancelling each other. Here’s how to tell which problem you have.

Mid/side rebalances Mid vs Side energy for stereo width and mono-safe bass control. Phase repair (PHIXER) rotates spectral L/R phase so cancelled frequencies stop fighting when summed. Same stereo bus, different jobs.
What mid/side encoding actually does
Mid/side (M/S) splits a stereo signal into Mid (what’s common to L and R — usually center / mono content) and Side (what differs — usually width / ambience). You can EQ, compress, or gain those channels separately, then decode back to L/R.
- Boost Side → more width / “stereo drama”
- Cut Side lows → keep bass mono-safe
- EQ Mid for punch without smearing the edges
That’s encoding and balance. It assumes L and R still add constructively in Mid. If they don’t, turning Side up often makes the mono collapse feel worse — more energy in the parts that cancel.
What phase cancellation actually is
When left and right carry the same frequency band at roughly opposite phase, those bands subtract when you sum to mono. Classic symptoms: bass that disappears on phones / clubs, hollow mids, “it sounded huge in headphones.”
Causes include dual-mic / dual-DI layers, stereo synth unison, chorus/Haas on low-mids, and stacked samples with tiny timing or polarity mismatches. A simple polarity flip or time-align fixes some cases. Frequency-dependent fights need spectral phase rotation — that’s PHIXER’s job.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mix already mono-safe; you want more width | M/S Side boost (sparingly) | You’re shaping width, not repairing cancellation |
| Bass dies in mono; stereo still “wide” | Mono check → polarity / align → phase repair | Side boost often makes cancellation louder |
| Only one band collapses (e.g. 80–200 Hz) | PHIXER (or band-limited repair) | Spectral phase fight, not a global width issue |
| Whole track flips with Invert | Polarity / wiring | 180° invert ≠ frequency-aware rotation |
| Two mics of same source | Time-align first | Delay mismatch before fancy phase tools |
| You want “bigger” after mono is solid | M/S or imager — then re-check mono | Imagers ≠ phase repair |
When to use PHIXER
- Mono-check the bus — if it collapses, don’t widen yet.
- Rule out polarity and obvious timing first.
- If stereo layers still cancel in bands, use PHIXER’s frequency-aware phase rotation so more energy survives the sum.
- Only then use M/S (or a stereo imager) for ear-candy width — and mono-check again.
Skip PHIXER when the problem isn’t phase at all — wrong arrangement, masking, or you just want more Side. See when not to use PHIXER.
